Why should I carry?
Take this little bit of information from someone who’s been a Correctional Officer for over 12 years. I have watched offenders get an early release when they’re supposed to be doing a life sentence. Plus, not all violent offenders are doing a life sentence. A lot of them serve a short sentence and they’re back on the street. Some of them have not changed their mind about how they are going to behave. They are living in your neighborhood, watching you get in your car, watching you leave your home, and sitting in the parking lot when you leave the grocery.
Criminals love an easy opportunity. They target places and people that appear to be easy. As soon as a criminal realizes you’re not paying attention, they’re going to make a move. They may approach with kindness and get close to you. “Excuse me, my car ran out of gas, can you spare some money? Hello Miss, you look familiar, don’t you live in that brick house down the street?” Be careful when this person starts getting personal and you don’t know them. He or she could be a nice person making conversation, but is still a stranger to you and it could be a hustle. If they seem like a “creeper” and you have that gut feeling that doesn’t seem right based on his body movement (staring at you or getting closer to you), the time of day (night time), chances are you’re probably right.
Wherever you're at, keep in mind where your escape routes are. Do not let this possible criminal invade your space. A stranger should be at least two arms length away from you. As soon as a criminal feels the opportunity is there, they will attack you, rob you, or victimize you and run away before they get caught. Whenever you sense there could be a threat, leave immediately and get to your car.
A lot of people become complacent. Some live in that small town where everyone knows each other and has a very low crime rate. People think because nothing has ever happened, that nothing ever will. These are the people who usually become a victim of a crime. They don’t think about being alert, have a defense plan, or ever carry anything to protect themselves. Turn on the news for five minutes and tell me if you honestly believe that crime has been reduced? There’s a new victim in your area or surrounding area almost every day, and some aren’t reported. What if you’re out shopping and an active shooter walks in and starts shooting at everyone in the store? Does this ever happen?
Find an instructor who teaches basic fundamentals of pistol shooting and take the class. Apply for your carry concealed permit. Purchase a firearm you’re comfortable carrying and have it on you when you leave the house (even those quick trips to the store because you need a gallon of milk).
Have an emergency plan in mind what to do when something bad happens inside and outside the home. Be alert of your surroundings and think of situational awareness. Remember, the best way to win is by avoiding the situation.
Train often and carry everyday. Protect yourself, protect your family.
